Brownback is trying to position himself as the most conservative Republican presidential candidate in the 2008 field. Brownback’s signature issues are in the social arena – opposition to abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem cell research, among others. His voting record on economics is also solidly conservative: He has backed President Bush’s tax cuts, and in his January announcement speech he called for a flat tax to replace the current code. Yet Brownback has distanced himself from Bush on Iraq, casting doubt on the president’s proposed troop “surge” plan. The senator has also tried to soften what critics have called hard edges in his profile by bringing notice to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur region of Sudan, ministering to inmates in U.S. prisons, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment and raising questions about the death penalty. Brownback has also drawn some fire from conservative activists over his support for immigration policy that includes some sort of legalization for undocumented workers.
